Scout Report

Big men who can move like guards and think the game at center speed are rare finds. When Link Academy needs a bucket in the half-court, they throw it down low to a 6-9 post player who finishes with either hand and makes the right read every time.

Background

Saint Louis has always been a basketball hotbed, and Tristan Reed grew up in that culture before making the move to Missouri's premier prep program. Link Academy became his home for a reason - the chance to develop alongside elite talent while facing top competition nightly. The school's track record of developing big men for major college programs made it an easy choice for a player with Reed's tools and ambition.

Playing Style

Reed controls the paint on both ends with intelligence that separates him from typical post players. He reads defenses quickly in the low block, recognizing double teams before they arrive and finding the open man with crisp passes. His footwork in the post is advanced for his age, allowing him to create separation against bigger defenders. Defensively, he anchors the middle without gambling for highlights, understanding positioning and help defense concepts that usually take years to master. The pace never seems to bother him - whether Link Academy is pushing in transition or grinding through half-court sets, Reed adjusts his energy and decision-making accordingly. His basketball IQ shows up in small moments, like sealing angles for rebounds or setting solid screens that free up teammates.

Strengths

The combination of size, hands, and court vision makes Reed a matchup problem at the prep level. His passing ability from the post is genuinely impressive - he sees cutters and shooters that other centers miss entirely. Around the rim, he finishes through contact with both hands, showing touch that extends beyond basic dunks and layups. That soft shooting touch carries over to mid-range situations where he can step out and knock down open looks when defenses sag off.

Areas to Watch

Adding functional strength will be crucial as he faces older, more physical post players at the college level. His motor runs hot and cold at times - the nights when he plays with consistent energy from tip to buzzer are when his impact really shows. Expanding his range to become a legitimate three-point threat would make him nearly impossible to guard.

Player Comparison

He reminds me of a young Brook Lopez in terms of basketball intelligence and shooting potential, though Reed is more advanced as a passer at this stage. Both players understand how to use their size without relying solely on athleticism, and both have that natural feel for timing and spacing that can't be taught.

Recruitment

Mississippi State won a competitive recruiting battle for Reed's services, beating out several Big Ten programs and other SEC schools in the process. Coach Chris Jans and his staff identified Reed early as a cornerstone piece for their frontcourt future, and that early attention paid off when Reed committed. With the Bulldogs losing veteran big men to graduation and the transfer portal, Reed should have opportunities to contribute as a freshman. The commitment came at the right time for both sides - Mississippi State gets a skilled big man who fits their system, and Reed gets a clear path to playing time in the SEC.

Projection

Reed projects as a four-year college player who could develop into an All-SEC caliber center by his junior or senior seasons. Professional opportunities will depend on how his shooting range develops and whether he can maintain his mobility as he adds necessary strength. His basketball IQ and passing ability give him a higher floor than most centers, making him the type of player who helps winning programs even if the NBA isn't in the cards.
