Scout Report
When you find a legitimate 6-foot-11 frame who moves with surprising fluidity and already understands defensive rotations as a junior, you stop what you're doing and pay attention. That's exactly what happened when college coaches got their first extended look at this SoCal Academy big man last summer.
Background
Trevon Carter-Givens grew up in Castaic, a quiet community nestled in the mountains north of Los Angeles, where basketball wasn't necessarily the first sport that came to mind. His path to SoCal Academy represents a calculated move to maximize his development alongside elite talent. The school's pipeline to major college programs and focus on developing big men made it an obvious choice for a player with his physical tools. Playing in that environment daily has accelerated his understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest levels.
Playing Style
Carter-Givens plays with a measured approach that reflects both his basketball IQ and his still-developing comfort with his frame. He's not going to overwhelm you with explosive athleticism, but he consistently makes the right reads and positions himself well on both ends. His defensive instincts are already college-ready - he rotates properly, contests shots without fouling, and has legitimate rim protection potential. Offensively, he operates primarily around the basket but shows flashes of being able to step out and hit mid-range shots when left open. He's still growing into his body, which sometimes shows in his lateral movement, but the foundation is solid. What separates him from other big men his age is his basketball intelligence and willingness to do the dirty work that wins games.
Strengths
The defensive awareness jumps off the tape immediately. Carter-Givens reads screens well, helps at the right times, and has the length to alter shots even when he's not in perfect position. His hands are surprisingly good for a player his size - he catches passes cleanly and doesn't turn the ball over when he gets it in traffic. Around the rim, he finishes efficiently with both hands and has developed a reliable hook shot that's tough to defend. The motor runs consistently, and he rebounds his area without needing to be reminded.
Areas to Watch
The biggest development area is expanding his offensive range and becoming more assertive when he has mismatches. He has the shooting mechanics to eventually stretch to the three-point line, but that's still a work in progress. Adding 15-20 pounds of functional strength would help him hold position better against physical post players and finish through more contact.
Player Comparison
Think of a young Myles Turner in terms of build and defensive instincts, though Carter-Givens is still developing the offensive versatility that makes Turner special. Both players have that same long, lean frame and natural shot-blocking timing. The comparison works because neither relies on overwhelming athleticism but instead uses length, positioning, and basketball IQ to impact games.
Recruitment
With 11 Division I offers already in hand and a commitment to NC State locked in, Carter-Givens represents exactly what Kevin Keatts wants in his frontcourt. The Wolfpack beat out programs like Arizona State, USC, and Florida State for his services, which speaks to both his potential and NC State's ability to develop big men. His commitment gives the program a legitimate rim protector for the 2026 class, and the early decision allows him to focus entirely on development rather than recruitment. The fit makes sense - NC State has shown they can develop lengthy forwards and centers into productive ACC players.
Projection
At the college level, Carter-Givens projects as a solid rotation player who could develop into a starter by his junior or senior year. His defensive skills should translate immediately, making him valuable even as he develops offensively. The NBA potential exists if he can add range to his shot and continue filling out his frame, but his floor is a productive four-year college player who impacts winning through defense and basketball IQ.
