Scout Report

When a 6-5 combo guard from Southern California draws interest from programs spanning the Pac-12, ACC, and WCC, there's usually something special brewing. JRob Croy has been making that case all summer on the EYBL circuit, where his blend of size and skill has college coaches taking notes.

Background

Riverside isn't exactly a basketball hotbed, but Croy has found ways to get noticed from the Inland Empire. Playing at Polytechnic, he's had to carry a heavy load for his high school squad while also grinding through the elite AAU circuits. His EYBL and UAA experience has been crucial for his development, going up against the nation's best guards regularly. The exposure from those circuits helped him build relationships with high-major programs across the country.

Playing Style

Croy operates with the confidence of a primary scorer but the vision of a true point guard. At 6-5, he can see over most defensive sets and regularly finds teammates in advantageous positions. He's comfortable initiating offense in the half-court, whether that's running pick-and-roll or attacking mismatches in isolation. His size allows him to finish over smaller guards in the lane, and he's not afraid to use his frame to create contact. Defensively, he can guard multiple positions and uses his length to disrupt passing lanes. The motor runs consistently on both ends, and he competes on every possession.

Strengths

The combination of size and court vision separates Croy from most guards in his class. He can make reads that smaller point guards simply can't see, and his passing accuracy in traffic is well above average. His shooting stroke has real consistency from three-point range, making him a legitimate threat in catch-and-shoot situations. When he gets downhill, defenders struggle to contain his combination of length and athleticism.

Areas to Watch

Consistency with his decision-making will determine how high his ceiling goes. He can sometimes force shots when better options are available. Adding more strength to his frame would help him finish through contact more reliably at the rim.

Player Comparison

There are shades of Malachi Flynn in his game - that 6-5 combo guard who can run point but score when needed. Both have similar builds and the ability to impact winning through multiple skill sets rather than one dominant trait.

Recruitment

With 11 D1 offers already in hand, Croy has committed to Arizona State, choosing the Sun Devils over a strong field that includes Stanford, Gonzaga, and Oregon. Bobby Hurley clearly sees him as a centerpiece for the program's future, and the early commitment gives ASU a significant recruiting win. His #124 national ranking in the 2026 class should continue rising with strong senior season performance.

Projection

At Arizona State, Croy projects as an immediate contributor who could start by his sophomore season. His versatility gives Hurley multiple lineup options, and his basketball IQ suggests he'll adapt quickly to college pace. Professional potential exists if he continues developing his consistency and adds more strength to his frame.
