Scout Report
When you've got the nation's #15 recruit on your team, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle. Yet Cam Lomax has carved out his own identity playing alongside Duke commit Bryson Howard at Frisco Heritage, proving that high-level programs can develop multiple elite guards simultaneously.
Background
Frisco, Texas continues to pump out college-ready basketball talent, and Lomax represents the latest product of the Dallas suburbs' competitive prep scene. Growing up in one of the state's most talent-rich areas, he's been battle-tested against top competition since middle school. At Frisco Heritage, he's developed under a program that's become known for maximizing guard potential. Playing alongside Howard has actually accelerated his development, forcing him to find different ways to impact winning when he's not the primary option.
Playing Style
Lomax operates with the calm efficiency of a veteran point guard despite his combo guard classification. He reads defenses quickly in pick-and-roll situations and consistently makes the right pass when help arrives. His court vision allows him to find teammates in rhythm, but he's equally comfortable taking over scoring responsibilities when the game demands it. Defensively, he uses his 6-0 frame well, staying low in his stance and using active hands to disrupt passing lanes. The pace rarely feels too fast for him, whether he's running a fast break or managing a late-game possession. His basketball IQ shows up most in transition, where he knows when to push and when to pull the ball out.
Strengths
His pull-up jumper from midrange is already college-ready, with smooth mechanics and the ability to create separation off the dribble. Lomax processes the game at a high level, rarely forcing shots or passes even when defensive pressure ramps up. He's got the handle to break down defenders one-on-one and the vision to find the open man when help rotates over. Perhaps most importantly, he competes with consistent energy on both ends, never taking plays off even when his shot isn't falling.
Areas to Watch
Adding strength to his frame would help him finish through contact at the rim more consistently. His three-point range is solid but developing that into an elite weapon would make him nearly impossible to guard. The biggest area for growth is becoming more aggressive looking for his own shot, especially when playing alongside other talented scorers.
Player Comparison
He reminds me of a young Jalen Brunson in terms of basketball IQ and decision-making. Both have that steady presence where they rarely beat themselves with poor choices, and both can score when needed without forcing the issue. The physical tools are similar too, with enough size to play either guard spot but relying more on skill than athleticism.
Recruitment
With 11 Division I offers already in hand, Lomax committed to SMU and stayed close to home. The Mustangs beat out several power conference programs including Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Arizona State for his services. SMU's recent success and proximity to his family made the decision relatively straightforward. He'll enroll in fall 2026 and should have an opportunity to contribute early given the program's guard-friendly system.
Projection
At SMU, he projects as a multi-year starter who can play either guard position depending on personnel. His skill set translates well to the college game, and he should develop into a reliable scorer and facilitator by his junior season. Professional basketball isn't out of the question if he continues developing his shot and adds some strength, but his floor is a solid four-year college player who impacts winning.
