Scout Report

Kentucky, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Iowa State. Nobody collects an offer sheet like that by accident, and rarely out of a Kaukauna gym. Donovan Davis is a 6-7 power forward ranked #51 nationally in the class of 2027, and he has already picked his college home.

Background

Davis comes out of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, and plays his high school ball at Freedom. Prospects from that part of the state don't get the automatic exposure that comes with a major metro market, so a top-51 national ranking says the evaluators found him anyway. Wisconsin has produced plenty of tough, skilled forwards, and Davis fits that mold on paper. He stayed close to the Midwest in the end, which makes sense given the programs that came after him.

Playing Style

At 6-7, Davis fits the modern four-man profile: big enough to play inside, mobile enough to defend in space. That is the position high-major staffs are paying for right now. Positional size at that height is rarely the selling point on its own. What matters is how fast he processes the game, and the offer list from Cal, Iowa, Syracuse, and Marquette suggests coaches like his feel and versatility. Expect a forward who can run the floor in transition, screen and roll or pop in the pick-and-roll, and crash the glass without needing plays called for him. On defense, the job is to guard multiple spots, rotate on time, and hold up against bigger bodies without getting pushed off the block. He is not a lob-catching rim protector built on length alone. He is a connector who wins with positioning, effort, and reads. The ranking tells a scout he does enough of those things at a high level against good competition.

Strengths

The first thing coaches see on tape is the fit. A 6-7 forward who can play both inside and on the perimeter gives a staff lineup flexibility, whether it runs a five-out look or needs a second big-bodied rebounder. His offer list spans very different systems, from Kentucky to Wisconsin to Syracuse, and that tells a scout his game translates across styles. Offers from programs that recruit nationally also point to a player who holds up athletically against the best prep competition, not just a regional name. Iowa State saw all of that and won him over.

Areas to Watch

At 6-7, the question for any power forward is how he handles the physical jump to Big 12 bigs, so adding strength and keeping his feet moving on the defensive end will matter. The perimeter side deserves attention too. The more consistently he can punish defenders who sag off him, the more useful he becomes in a spread offense. Refining his handle and decision-making against pressure would also help him hold a bigger role early.

Player Comparison

A loose comp is a Big 12-style undersized forward who wins through motor, spacing, and positioning instead of size, in the vein of a Georges Niang type of frame and role. The comparison is about role and body type, not a promise on skill level. Davis will carve out his own version of it.

Recruitment

This one is finished. Davis is committed to Iowa State and has been through a heavy recruitment that included seven Division I offers from Cal, Iowa, Iowa State, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Marquette. That is a mix of Power conference programs and a strong Big East name, all with national reach. With his senior season approaching, the main work now is staying healthy and finishing strong at Freedom. Iowa State got a top-51 national prospect from the Midwest, a solid win for a staff that clearly values versatile forwards.

Projection

The college ceiling is a multi-year rotation forward in the Big 12 who gives Iowa State size and flexibility at the four and perhaps minutes as a small-ball five. If the shooting and strength develop, he could grow into a starter. The pro path is harder to call, since players at 6-7 need a clear NBA-level skill to stick, but a productive college career could lead to a good professional career, whether in the G League or overseas. The range runs from solid contributor to a high-level college starter, and the work he puts in over the next two years will decide where he lands.
