Scout Report

When a 6-foot-11 big man pulls up from three with confidence and swishes it clean, coaches take notice. That comfort level beyond the arc separates Theo Edema from most traditional centers in the 2027 class.

Background

The Ashburnham, Massachusetts native landed at Cushing Academy after recognizing he needed elite competition to showcase his evolving skill set. Playing in the competitive NEPSAC Class AA circuit has accelerated his development significantly. The basketball program at Cushing has become his basketball laboratory, where he's refined the shooting touch that makes him such an intriguing prospect. His family emphasized academics alongside athletics, which made the prestigious prep school environment a natural fit.

Playing Style

Edema operates as a modern stretch five who can pull opposing centers away from the basket with his shooting range. He's comfortable stepping out to the three-point line and has the mechanics to be a legitimate threat from deep. Defensively, he uses his length and positioning to alter shots without always going for spectacular blocks. His decision-making reflects good basketball IQ - he doesn't force difficult shots and understands spacing concepts well for a player his age. In transition, he runs the floor effectively for his size and can finish above the rim when the opportunity presents itself. The combination of size and skill makes him a matchup problem that opposing coaches have to game-plan around.

Strengths

That shooting stroke is legitimate - his release is consistent and he has range that extends well beyond the college three-point line. Defensively, his 6-11 frame creates natural disruption in the paint, and he's developing the instincts to be in the right position consistently. His basketball IQ shows up in his shot selection and willingness to make the extra pass when defenses collapse on him. The fact that he can space the floor while also providing rim protection gives him immediate value at the college level.

Areas to Watch

Adding functional strength will be crucial as he faces more physical competition at the college level. His handle needs development to take full advantage of closeouts when defenders run at his outside shot. Becoming more assertive on the offensive glass would add another dimension to his game and help him impact winning beyond just shooting.

Player Comparison

He has shades of Brook Lopez in terms of that shooting ability from a true center, though obviously earlier in his development. Like Lopez, Edema can stretch defenses while still providing legitimate rim protection on the other end. The comparison works because both players force opposing coaches to make difficult decisions about how to defend pick-and-roll situations.

Recruitment

Maryland won a competitive recruitment that included serious interest from Kansas, Auburn, and Syracuse among his 15 Division I offers. The Terrapins' track record of developing big men and their need for frontcourt depth in the coming years made them an attractive landing spot. His commitment gives Maryland a foundational piece for their 2027 recruiting class, and the timing works well with their current roster construction. The relationship with the coaching staff and the opportunity to contribute early likely played significant roles in his decision.

Projection

At Maryland, he projects as an immediate contributor who can provide valuable minutes as a stretch five in their system. His ceiling depends on how much he can add to his overall game beyond shooting, but the foundation is strong enough to suggest he could develop into a consistent starter. The combination of size, shooting, and basketball IQ gives him the tools to potentially play professionally overseas if everything develops properly.
