Scout Report

When college coaches fire up film from SoCal Academy, they're watching one of the most talent-loaded prep programs in the country. But increasingly, their eyes keep drifting to the smooth stroke of a 6-4 sophomore who's already making veteran shooters look ordinary.

Background

Mekhi Robertson grew up in Los Angeles, where basketball talent runs deep and competition never stops. The 2027 guard found his way to Southern California Academy, a program that's become a pipeline for high-major talent. Playing in that environment daily, alongside future college stars like Kentucky-bound Tyler Jackson and St. John's commit Kelvin Odih, has accelerated his development significantly. The competitive atmosphere at SoCal Academy has pushed Robertson to elevate his game against older, more experienced players every single practice.

Playing Style

Robertson operates with a maturity that belies his sophomore status, largely because he's learned to play within himself alongside elite-level teammates. He understands spacing and timing in ways that most underclassmen don't, moving without the ball to create clean looks for himself and others. His decision-making reflects someone who's been coached well and plays within a system rather than freelancing. Defensively, he uses his length intelligently, staying disciplined in his positioning and not gambling for steals. The pace of his game is controlled rather than frenetic - he doesn't force action but capitalizes when opportunities present themselves. His basketball IQ shows up in how he reads defensive rotations and finds the soft spots in coverage.

Strengths

The jumper is his calling card, and it's legitimate at every level from mid-range to NBA three. Robertson has developed consistent mechanics and arc on his shot, with quick release that makes him tough to contest. His shooting form stays consistent whether he's catching and firing or coming off movement, which suggests serious time in the gym working on his craft. The stroke translates in game situations because he's comfortable shooting over length and doesn't need excessive space to get clean looks off.

Areas to Watch

Creating his own shot off the dribble remains a work in progress - he's much more dangerous as a catch-and-shoot threat than when forced to generate offense in isolation. Adding strength will help him finish through contact at the rim and handle physical pressure from defenders. His ball-handling skills need refinement if he's going to maximize his scoring potential at higher levels.

Player Comparison

There's some Kyle Korver in his game, though Robertson has better size and athleticism than Korver did at the same age. Both players built their value around pure shooting ability and basketball intelligence rather than explosive athleticism. Like Korver, Robertson understands how to move without the ball and find open spaces, making him a valuable weapon in structured offenses.

Recruitment

Eight Division I offers already for a sophomore is impressive, with a nice mix of mid-major programs like High Point and Samford alongside high-major schools like NC State and West Virginia. The fact that NC State is involved makes sense given their connection to his teammate Trevon Carter-Givens, who's already committed there. Programs are betting on his shooting ability translating and his overall game continuing to develop around that foundation. Expect his recruitment to heat up significantly over the next year as more coaches discover his abilities.

Projection

At the college level, Robertson projects as a reliable rotation player who can provide instant offense off the bench or space the floor as a role starter. His shooting ability alone makes him valuable in today's game, and if he continues developing his all-around skills, he could become a four-year contributor at a high-major program. Professional basketball isn't out of the question if he maximizes his physical development and continues improving his shot creation.
