Scout Report

Nine Division I offers before a kid can legally drive to a late-night study session — that's the resume Jack Kohnen built out of Slinger, Wisconsin. Iowa State won the sweepstakes, but Indiana, Notre Dame and Wake Forest all took their shot. For a 2027 wing ranked 57th nationally, that's not a fluke — that's a game that translates.

Background

Kohnen grew up in Slinger, a small Wisconsin town that isn't exactly a recruiting hotbed, and he's turned it into one almost single-handedly. He plays his high school ball at Slinger and has built his AAU reputation alongside his younger brother Joey Kohnen, a 2028 SF in his own right, giving the family a package deal that's hard for coaches to ignore. The Midwest pipeline clearly knows him well — Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska all got in early, which tells you regional staffs have been tracking him since he was still growing into his frame. It's a classic Midwest story: unheralded hometown, big body, bigger upside.

Playing Style

At 6-foot-6, Kohnen plays the kind of position-less wing basketball that modern college staffs are desperate for. He's comfortable initiating in transition, but he doesn't force the issue — his decision-making reads as patient for a player his age, letting the game come to him rather than trying to manufacture offense out of nothing. Off the catch he's a threat from the perimeter, and his size lets him shoot over the top of closeouts that would bother a smaller guard. Defensively, that same length shows up in passing lanes and on closeouts, where he can contest without fouling because he doesn't need to gamble. He's not a ball-dominant wing — he fits into what's around him, which is exactly why multiple high-major programs with different offensive systems all wanted him. The motor is there in spurts; when he's engaged, he affects possessions on both ends without needing the ball in his hands.

Strengths

The frame is the starting point — 6-6 with room to fill out, which already projects well at the next level without major physical development. His shooting touch from the wing is the separator; college coaches don't chase 6-6 wings with nine offers unless the jumper is real. He plays within structure, which shows up in his assist-to-turnover tendencies and his willingness to take the open man over the hero shot. There's also a defensive versatility piece — he can guard multiple spots because of his length, which is valuable in an era where switching matters more than ever.

Areas to Watch

The physical tools are ahead of the strength right now — adding functional muscle will be the key to holding up against bigger forwards in Big 12 play. His ball-handling under pressure needs sharpening if Iowa State wants to use him in more ball-screen actions rather than just as a catch-and-shoot release valve. Consistency on the defensive end — staying engaged possession to possession rather than in flashes — is the other piece that unlocks a true two-way role.

Player Comparison

His game profiles similarly to a young Mikal Bridges type — a 6-6 wing who doesn't need huge usage to impact winning, relying instead on shooting gravity, length and smart off-ball reads. That comparison fits less because of polish right now and more because of role projection: a connective piece who space the floor and defends across positions rather than a high-usage scorer.

Recruitment

Kohnen has already committed to Iowa State, which says a lot about how quickly this recruitment moved given he's still two full seasons away from his signing class graduating. Getting Indiana, Notre Dame and Wake Forest involved before locking in with the Cyclones speaks to how national the interest was, even if the in-state and regional programs — Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska — had the inside track all along. Western Illinois and an unnamed ninth offer round out a list that shows both high-major and mid-major programs recognized the talent early. Iowa State staff clearly moved fast and decisively to lock up a 2027 prospect this far out, and with Joey Kohnen still playing and drawing his own attention, Slinger's pipeline to Ames may not be finished.

Projection

The college ceiling here is a rotation wing who grows into a starting role by his junior year — a 3-and-D type who stretches the floor and guards multiple positions in a Big 12 system. The pro outlook is speculative given how far off he is from college minutes, but the shooting-plus-length combination is the exact profile NBA teams covet in wings, even if it's a role-player trajectory rather than a star one. Realistically, this projects as a four-year college piece with a chance at a pro look overseas or in a two-way capacity if the jumper and frame both continue to develop.
