Scout Report

When you're 6-3 running the point and the #102 player in your class is still flying under the radar at Mt. Zion Prep, that usually means the talent evaluators haven't caught up yet. Jacob Canton is banking on that gap closing soon.

Background

The Lanham, Maryland native has taken the prep school route through Mt. Zion, where he's learning to orchestrate one of the more talented rosters in the country. Playing alongside elite big man Zion Green (#32 in 2027) and with veterans like Emmanuel Kanga (George Mason commit) and Favour Ibe (Maryland commit), Canton gets daily work against high-major talent. His family made the strategic move to Mt. Zion knowing he'd need to prove himself against this caliber of competition to earn the recruitment he's seeking. The DMV area has always been rich with point guard talent, and Canton is working to establish himself in that lineage.

Playing Style

Canton operates with the patience of a much older player, rarely forcing situations when the defense isn't giving him what he wants. His size allows him to see over most opposing guards and find passing lanes that shorter floor generals simply cannot access. He's comfortable pushing tempo when Mt. Zion gets stops, but equally effective in the halfcourt where he can use his length to create separation on drives. Defensively, he uses his wingspan well to disrupt passing lanes and can switch onto wings when needed, though he's not going to lock down elite athletes yet. The decision-making is advanced for his class - he understands when to be aggressive looking for his own shot versus when to get his talented teammates involved. You see the basketball IQ most clearly in transition, where he consistently makes the right read between pushing for a quick score or pulling it out to set up the offense.

Strengths

That 6-3 frame at the point guard position creates matchup problems every night, especially when combined with his feel for finding open teammates. His court vision is genuinely impressive - he's consistently hitting the big men with passes in traffic and finding cutters before the defense can rotate. The jump shot has solid mechanics and he's not afraid to pull from deep when defenders go under screens. Most importantly, he competes on defense and doesn't take possessions off, which coaches at Mt. Zion clearly value given the talent around him.

Areas to Watch

The athletic explosion needs to continue developing if he wants to create easy scoring opportunities against high-major athletes. His handle is solid but could use tightening against pressure defense - sometimes he gets a bit loose with the ball when teams trap or press aggressively. Adding more consistent strength will help him finish through contact in the lane, where he currently struggles against bigger, more physical defenders.

Player Comparison

There are shades of Nico Mannion's college game here - similar size for the position and that innate passing ability, though Canton needs to develop more of an attacking mentality. Both players use their length well at the point and have that natural feel for getting teammates involved, but Mannion was more aggressive looking for his own offense.

Recruitment

His six D1 offers represent a solid foundation with programs like Mississippi State and Seton Hall showing serious interest, while Penn State and West Virginia add geographic diversity to his recruitment. The timeline favors Canton since he's a 2027 prospect with two more years to develop and add offers. Expect his recruitment to heat up significantly if he has a strong showing on the AAU circuit this spring and summer. Programs are likely waiting to see how much his athleticism develops, but the fundamental skills and basketball IQ are clearly translating at the prep level.

Projection

Canton profiles as a multi-year contributor at the high-major level who could develop into a starting point guard by his junior or senior seasons. His ceiling depends heavily on athletic development, but the floor is quite high given his size, IQ, and passing ability. Professional basketball seems like a reach at this point, but if he continues adding explosion and tightens his overall skill set, overseas opportunities could materialize down the line.
