Scout Report

The gym goes quiet when shooters find their rhythm. That moment when a player catches fire and you can feel the defense start to panic with each catch. Tony Cornett III has built his reputation on creating those moments.

Background

Out of Westerville, Ohio, a suburb that sits comfortably northeast of Columbus, Cornett has developed his game at Westerville North High School. The 6-4 guard comes from a basketball family - his name carries the III designation, suggesting the game runs deep in the bloodline. He's navigated the competitive Ohio high school landscape while building relationships with college programs across the region. His development has caught the attention of mid-major programs looking for proven shooters who can contribute early.

Playing Style

Cornett operates as a prototypical shooting guard who understands his role and executes it with precision. He's not trying to do too much with the ball in his hands, instead focusing on movement without the basketball and finding clean looks from beyond the arc. His decision-making reflects a player who knows when to shoot and when to move the ball along. Defensively, he uses his 6-4 frame well, challenging shots and disrupting passing lanes without gambling for steals. The tempo of his game is controlled - he doesn't rush possessions but isn't afraid to pull the trigger when the shot presents itself. He impacts winning through spacing and shot-making rather than eye-popping athleticism.

Strengths

The shooting ability is legitimate and translatable to college basketball immediately. Cornett has the mechanics and confidence to knock down shots from NBA range, which makes him valuable in any offensive system. His release is quick enough to get shots off against college-level closeouts. Beyond the shooting, his basketball IQ shows up in how he moves off screens and finds open spots on the floor. He doesn't need the ball to be effective, making him an ideal complementary piece for programs that already have primary ball-handlers.

Areas to Watch

The next level of development comes in creating his own shot off the dribble and expanding his ability to attack closeouts with drives to the rim. While his shooting is advanced, adding a more diverse offensive skill set would make him harder to game-plan against. Continued strength development will help him handle the physicality of college basketball on both ends.

Player Comparison

He reminds me of a young Duncan Robinson in terms of role and skill set - a shooter who understands spacing and doesn't try to be something he's not. Both players maximize their abilities through basketball IQ and shot preparation rather than elite athleticism. The frame and shooting stroke project similarly to how Robinson developed into a reliable college contributor before his professional success.

Recruitment

With offers from Marshall, Kent State, Ohio, and Cleveland State already in hand, Cornett has positioned himself well within the MAC and regional mid-major landscape. These programs recognize his shooting ability as an immediate need, and his Ohio roots make him an attractive target for in-state schools. The recruitment should heat up as his junior season progresses and more coaches get eyes on him. Expect additional MAC schools and potentially some A-10 or similar level programs to enter the picture as word spreads about his shooting ability.

Projection

At the college level, Cornett projects as a rotation player who can contribute meaningful minutes as a sophomore and potentially start by his junior year. His shooting gives him a clear path to playing time, and smart coaches will find ways to get him clean looks within their offensive systems. The professional trajectory depends on continued development of his overall skill set, but shooters with his size and accuracy always have opportunities to extend their careers.

Westerville North is a juggernaut I turned on their game and saw they were down 7-2 to Westerville South. Turned it back on 20 minutes later and they're up 41-17 at halftime Looks like they haven't missed a beat from last year's state championship
