Scout Report

When you find a 6-9 frame that can move like a wing in a sophomore's body, you stop what you're doing and watch tape. Mustafa Mohamed has that rare combination of size and fluidity that makes college coaches start dreaming about what he could become.

Background

The Melissa, Texas native has taken an unconventional path to national recognition, landing at Compass Prep to elevate his game against elite competition. Coming from the Dallas suburbs, Mohamed represents the next wave of versatile big men emerging from Texas basketball hotbeds. His family made the strategic move to get him into a program that could maximize his development alongside other high-level recruits. At Compass Prep, he's sharing the floor with Trey Edwards, a 2028 shooting guard ranked 52nd nationally, giving him quality pieces to work with daily.

Playing Style

Mohamed operates with the basketball IQ of a guard trapped in a power forward's body. He processes the game at a pace that allows him to make the right read whether he's facing up from 15 feet or working in the post. What separates him from traditional big men is his ability to put the ball on the floor and attack closeouts with purpose. On defense, he uses his length to disrupt passing lanes while showing the mobility to switch onto smaller players without getting torched. His motor runs consistently hot on both ends. He doesn't take possessions off, which college coaches absolutely love when evaluating film. The way he moves in transition suggests there's even more athleticism to unlock as his body matures.

Strengths

His court vision from the forward spot creates mismatches that opposing coaches struggle to solve. Mohamed can thread passes over smaller defenders while seeing angles that most big men miss entirely. The shooting stroke is developing nicely with legitimate range extending past the three-point line. His hands are soft around the rim, and he finishes through contact better than most players his age. What really catches your attention is his rebounding instincts - he tracks the ball off the rim like he's been studying physics.

Areas to Watch

Adding functional strength will be crucial as he faces more physical competition at higher levels. His post moves need refinement to maximize his size advantage when smaller defenders try to guard him. The defensive positioning can be inconsistent when he's asked to protect the rim, though that should improve with experience and coaching.

Player Comparison

He reminds me of a young Lauri Markkanen with his combination of size, shooting touch, and passing ability. Like Markkanen, Mohamed has that European-style versatility where he can hurt you from multiple spots on the floor. The mobility and basketball IQ are already there - it's just a matter of adding the strength and consistency that comes with time.

Recruitment

Arizona State and Mississippi State are the most serious contenders right now, with both programs offering the kind of development system that could maximize his skill set. Saint Louis has been persistent in their pursuit, while Texas Arlington and Liu round out his current offer list. Expect more Power Five programs to jump in as his junior season progresses and coaches get more tape to evaluate. His recruitment should heat up significantly over the next six months as he continues developing at Compass Prep.

Projection

At the college level, he projects as a versatile four who can stretch the floor and create offense for others. His ceiling is as a potential NBA draft pick if he continues developing his shooting and adds the necessary strength. The floor is still pretty high - even if the pro dreams don't materialize, he's got the skill set to be a productive four-year college player who impacts winning.
