Scout Report
Big men who can face up, put the ball on the floor, and still protect the rim don't grow on trees — especially not at 6-8 in the 2027 class. Charles Pur is one of those rare frontcourt pieces who looks like he belongs in a jersey from a different decade, back when centers actually had to do more than just dunk and defend the restricted area.
Background
Pur hails from Geneva, a small town that doesn't typically produce five-star recruits, but his path through OHSPIRE Academy helped sharpen his game against tougher competition before he landed at Burlington Christian Academy. The move to Burlington put him in a program built to develop frontcourt talent and get him in front of college coaches on a national stage. He's still just a sophomore in high school terms — a 2027 grad — but his frame and skill level already look like they belong a class or two ahead. Family roots in a close-knit Midwest community have shaped a work ethic that shows up in how hard he competes on both ends.
Playing Style
Pur plays at a pace that's deceptive for a big man — he's not rushing, but he's not standing around either. He reads the floor well in ball-screen actions, slipping to open spots rather than just setting a screen and standing still, and he's shown flashes of being able to put the ball on the deck from the perimeter. Defensively, he's got the length to bother shots at the rim and the lateral quickness to hold his ground on the perimeter when switched onto smaller players. His motor runs hot on the offensive glass, where he shows a knack for timing his jumps rather than just outsizing people. He's still figuring out how to use his frame consistently in the post, but the flashes of footwork and touch around the rim suggest real offensive upside beyond just garbage buckets. On the defensive end, he's more disruptor than anchor right now — active hands, solid instincts, but still learning verticality and foul discipline.
Strengths
His combination of size and mobility is what jumps off the tape immediately — college coaches don't see many 6-8 players who can guard in space and still protect the rim. He's got touch extending beyond the paint, which gives him a chance to develop into a stretch big rather than a traditional back-to-basket center. Rebounding instincts are advanced for his age — he pursues the ball with purpose instead of just relying on length. Coaches watching him also notice his feel in pick-and-pop situations, where his footwork and timing look more advanced than a typical big man his age.
Areas to Watch
Strength is the obvious area — he needs to add functional mass to hold position against bigger, more physical post players at the next level. His outside shot, while flashing potential, needs more consistency and range if he wants to be a legitimate floor-spacing big in college. Developing a more reliable post-up package with go-to counters would help him score efficiently when matched up against smaller, quicker defenders who try to switch onto him.
Player Comparison
His game draws some comparisons to a young Jaren Jackson Jr. — not in terms of polish yet, but in frame, mobility, and the potential two-way skill set of a big who can protect the rim and eventually space the floor. Like Jackson, Pur's length and foot speed give him defensive versatility that most bigs his age simply don't have. The shooting touch is still developing, but the physical tools and defensive instincts mirror that same archetype of a modern, switchable five.
Recruitment
Ten D1 offers for a 2027 big man is a strong starting point, and the list reads like a who's-who of ACC and SEC programs — Maryland, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, and Charlotte are all in the mix, among others. No commitment is imminent given his class year, and expect this recruitment to heat up significantly over the next 18-24 months as he continues to develop physically. Programs that prioritize player development for bigs — ones with a track record of turning long, mobile frontcourt players into stretch-fives — will likely have the edge as this process plays out. Given the SEC and ACC interest already on the board, a high-major landing spot feels like the floor here.
Projection
Pur's ceiling in college is a high-major starting center who can protect the rim, finish above it, and eventually space the floor enough to keep defenses honest. The floor outcome, if the shot and strength don't fully develop, is still a rotation big who defends multiple positions and cleans up the glass — a role plenty of programs would take. His NBA outlook is speculative at this stage of high school, but the physical tools and switchability give him a legitimate long-term development trajectory if things progress as expected.
