Scout Report
The gym goes quiet when a sophomore point guard threads a pass through three defenders like he's playing a different sport entirely. That's what Oklahoma coaches saw when they first caught Tyson Pogi orchestrating the offense for Southmoore last season.
Background
Growing up in Mustang, Oklahoma, Pogi developed his court vision on the youth circuits around Oklahoma City before landing at Southmoore High School. The 5-11 point guard has deep roots in the state but expanded his horizons through AAU ball with a Midwest City-based program. His EYBL experience and appearances at Peach Jam put him on the national radar, exposing him to elite competition that refined his game against top-tier talent. The small-town Oklahoma kid learned to hold his own against future Power Five players on the summer circuit.
Playing Style
Pogi plays with the patience of a veteran and the burst of a young athlete who hasn't hit his physical ceiling yet. He controls tempo naturally, knowing when to push pace in transition and when to slow things down and probe the defense in the halfcourt. His decision-making rarely looks forced, and he processes defensive rotations quickly enough to find the right pass before help arrives. On defense, he uses active hands and smart positioning to disrupt passing lanes, though his 5-11 frame means he has to rely on anticipation rather than physical intimidation. The motor runs consistently on both ends, and he competes hard even when the shot isn't falling. He affects winning through little things that don't always show up in the box score but coaches notice immediately when watching film.
Strengths
His court vision separates him from most guards in his class, finding passing angles that force you to rewind the tape to see how he threaded that needle. The basketball IQ jumps out immediately, reading defenses and making the right play even under pressure. He handles contact well for his size, absorbing bumps in the lane and still finishing plays. His jumper has solid mechanics and he's comfortable pulling up off the dribble when the defense goes under screens.
Areas to Watch
Adding functional strength will be crucial as he faces bigger, more physical guards at the college level. His shot selection can get questionable when he's trying to create offense for a struggling team, forcing some looks that better players will make him pay for. Developing more consistency from three-point range would make him much harder to guard and open up driving lanes.
Player Comparison
He reminds me of a young TJ McConnell with better shooting potential. Both have that innate feel for the game and natural leadership despite not having elite size or athleticism. Like McConnell, Pogi makes his teammates better through smart play and rarely beats himself with poor decisions.
Recruitment
Oklahoma State and Saint Louis have already extended offers, with the Cowboys having the obvious in-state advantage and established relationships in Oklahoma high school basketball. His EYBL exposure should generate more Power Five interest as coaches get more looks at him against elite competition. Being ranked 143rd nationally in a loaded 2027 class puts him in that sweet spot where he's proven but not over-recruited yet. Expect his recruitment to heat up significantly during his junior season if he continues developing his shooting range.
Projection
He projects as a four-year college player who could develop into a starting point guard by his junior or senior season at a mid-major or solid rotation player at a Power Five program. The basketball IQ and leadership give him a high floor, while improved shooting and strength could push his ceiling toward being a legitimate conference player of the year candidate. Professional opportunities overseas are realistic if his physical development matches his mental growth.
