Background
Glen Burnie, Maryland isn't exactly a pipeline city for national recruits, but Archbishop Spalding is quietly changing that, and Avery sits at the center of it. He's come up in Anne Arundel County basketball circles, developing inside a program that's become one of the more-watched mid-Atlantic gyms on the prep circuit. At Spalding he shares a frontcourt with Braxton Bogard, another 2028 big ranked nationally, and the two push each other in practice reps that show up clearly on film. For a player still two years out from his final high school season, Avery's already logging real minutes against varsity-level competition — a sign his coaches trust him in winning moments, not just as a developmental piece.
Playing Style
Avery plays with a pace that belies his age — he's not rushing possessions, and he reads the floor like someone who's been coached to think two passes ahead. At 6-foot-8, he's comfortable facing up from the elbow, putting the ball on the deck going either direction, and finishing through contact rather than looking to avoid it. Defensively, his length lets him bother shots at the rim without fouling, and his feet are quick enough to step out onto the perimeter in ball-screen coverage. He's not a ball-stopper on offense; possessions flow through him on the block or at the top of the key, and he's shown a willingness to find the open man instead of forcing a tough look. In transition he runs the floor hard and finishes above the rim, which separates him from plenty of bigs his age still figuring out their bodies. The motor doesn't dip late, either — he competes on the glass from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
Strengths
What jumps off the tape first is the face-up game — real shooting mechanics from midrange, plus a handle good enough to attack a closeout off one or two dribbles. His length shows up on the glass, where timing as much as size makes him an above-average rebounder at both ends. He passes well out of the post, hitting cutters and finding shooters on the weak side when defenses collapse on him. Coaches also point to his willingness to defend in space, switching onto wings without getting consistently beaten off the dribble.
Areas to Watch
Avery needs to add strength to hold his ground against bigger, more physical post players as competition levels rise. His perimeter jumper is more projection than proven weapon right now — the mechanics are there, but the volume and consistency from distance still have to catch up to the rest of his game. Tightening his handle under ball pressure would open up more of his face-up attacks against longer, more athletic defenders.
Player Comparison
His blend of face-up skill, length, and secondary passing brings to mind a young Jaren Jackson Jr. — not as a finished rim protector yet, but in terms of frame and the comfort operating both inside and out. Like Jackson, Avery's long-term value projects around stretching defenses as a four who can still protect the paint and run the floor. It's an aspirational comp for a 2028 prospect, but the tools point in that direction.
Recruitment
Avery already holds 16 Division I offers, a striking number for a player still two full years from his senior season. Maryland, Syracuse, Kansas, Florida, Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss are among the programs that have extended, which says plenty about how national staffs view his long-term upside. He hasn't committed, and given his class there's no urgency to — expect his recruitment to stay open and keep expanding as more programs see him on the AAU circuit over the next year or two. Maryland's proximity gives the Terps a natural inside track to monitor, but this decision realistically plays out over multiple recruiting cycles.
Projection
If his frame fills out and the jumper keeps progressing, Avery projects as a high-major four capable of defending multiple positions while spacing the floor — the kind of modern big every power-conference program covets. Whether he becomes a featured frontcourt scorer or a complementary stretch-four role player will come down to strength development and outside shooting consistency. Pro translation is a long way off given his class, but the physical tools and skill combination already give him legitimate upside beyond college.
