Flip on a Dream City Christian game and the first thing you notice is who's not dribbling. The ball keeps moving, the defense keeps shifting, and somewhere in the middle of it is a 6-4 point guard who seems to be reading three moves ahead of everyone on the floor. That is the kind of player who makes a scout stop taking notes and just watch.

Mateen Cleaves Jr. comes out of Flint, Michigan, a city with a long and proud basketball tradition and a name that carries weight in the state. He plays his high school ball at Dream City Christian, where he runs the offense alongside a talented group that includes 2027 forward Malachi Jordan, 2026 guard Ikenna Alozie, and 2027 center Chris Brown Jr. That kind of roster around you tells you something about the level of competition he sees every day. Playing Style
Cleaves is a point guard who controls the pace without needing to force it. Turning his size and vision into a more consistent off-ball threat would also make him harder to defend at the college level, where opponents will be bigger and faster than what he's used to.

Cleaves holds four D1 offers, including Rutgers, Michigan, Michigan State, and Son of Spartans Legend. He's a 2028 prospect, so there's still a long runway before he has to make a decision, and the offer list will almost certainly grow as he continues to develop and gets more exposure on the summer circuit. Projection
If Cleaves keeps developing his shooting and pull-up game, he has a realistic path to being a high-major starting point guard who can run a team with his size and vision. The range of outcomes is wide, though. If the scoring doesn't come along, he could still carve out a role as a playmaking guard in a rotation, and that is a valuable profile. At the pro level, his ceiling depends on whether he becomes a dependable scorer, because the passing and decision-making are already a strong base to build on.
