A high school backcourt running two Power Four-bound seniors and a 2027 point guard who's already locked up his college home — that's the room Peyton Kemp plays in every night at Ferndale. Most 15- and 16-year-olds would get swallowed up sharing the floor with a Notre Dame commit and a Maryland signee. Kemp runs the show anyway.

Kemp grew up in La Porte, Indiana, not far from the basketball-rich corridor between South Bend and Michigan City. He landed at Ferndale, where he's spent his prep career alongside Jalen Haralson and Darius Adams — both now committed to Notre Dame and Maryland, respectively — plus fellow 2027 guard Devin Cleveland. Playing that many nights against the attention those two draw from opposing defenses has forced Kemp to sharpen his reads well ahead of his class. It's the kind of varsity gauntlet most underclassmen never see, let alone thrive in.
Playing Style
Kemp is a pass-first point guard who plays at his own pace — never rushed, rarely out of control. He reads ball-screens well for his age, comfortable snaking the pick-and-roll or kicking out early when the defense tags the roller. On the perimeter, he's more connector than primary scorer right now, the guy who pushes Ferndale into its offense and finds Haralson and Adams in their spots. Defensively, he picks up full court, uses his hands well, and competes on the ball even against bigger guards. The jump shot needs to become more consistent and more of a weapon — right now he's more playmaker than scorer, and a reliable pull-up or catch-and-shoot three would open the floor for him and his teammates alike. He'll need to add strength as he moves up levels, since physical guards can still bother him in ball-screen coverage. Sharpening his scoring instincts inside the arc, where he sometimes defers when he should attack, would round out the package.

Kemp's game draws comparisons to a young Tyus Jones — undersized for the position at 6-2, but cerebral, pass-first, and able to control a game without needing a heavy shot diet. Kemp already holds six Division I offers, including Florida State, Rutgers, Arkansas State, Old Dominion, Jacksonville, and Xavier — a strong list for a player still two classes away from graduating. Pro translation is a longer shot given his size and still-developing scoring, but savvy, pass-first guards with his frame have carved out rotation minutes overseas or in the G League before.
