Scout Report
International big men with legitimate versatility are becoming increasingly valuable in modern basketball, and this Virginia-bound forward represents exactly that commodity.
Background
Thijs de Ridder brings a unique international perspective to Charlottesville, having developed his game with Surne Bilbao Basket in Spain's competitive youth system. The 6-8 forward's journey through European basketball has provided him with a different foundation than most American prospects, emphasizing fundamentals and basketball IQ. His commitment to Virginia represents a significant coup for Tony Bennett's program, which has historically thrived with skilled big men who can adapt to multiple roles.
Playing Style
De Ridder's game reflects his European development, featuring solid fundamentals and court awareness that many American prospects lack at his age. At 6-8, he possesses the size to play power forward while maintaining enough mobility to step away from the basket. His skill set appears well-suited for Virginia's pack-line defense and patient offensive system, though he'll need to continue adding strength and athleticism to compete at the ACC level. The international experience has likely prepared him for the mental aspects of high-level basketball, giving him an edge in understanding spacing and team concepts.
Recruitment
Despite being ranked #157 nationally in the 2025 class, de Ridder's commitment to Virginia suggests the Cavaliers saw potential that others may have overlooked. His European background and development path make him a classic Tony Bennett-type recruit who could develop into a valuable contributor over time. The lack of reported offers from other programs indicates Virginia identified him early and secured his commitment before he gained wider attention.
