Scout Report

When a 6-5 wing from Wisconsin commits to the Badgers before his junior season even starts, you know Greg Gard saw something special on the tape. LaTrevion Fenderson made that early pledge happen, locking up his home-state dream school while most kids his age are still figuring out their identity on the court.

Background

Fenderson grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, a blue-collar town that has produced its share of Division I talent over the years. He made the move to St. John's Northwestern Academies, a prep powerhouse that has helped develop college prospects for decades. The transition from public school ball in Wisconsin to the structured, high-level environment at St. John's has been crucial for his development. Playing against elite competition daily has accelerated his growth as both a player and a young man.

Playing Style

Fenderson plays the game at his own pace, never seeming rushed even when the tempo picks up around him. He has excellent court vision for a wing player and consistently makes the right read in pick-and-roll situations, whether that's hitting the roller, finding the corner shooter, or taking what the defense gives him. His basketball IQ really pops when you watch him play multiple games - he learns from mistakes quickly and adjusts his approach accordingly. On defense, he uses his length well to disrupt passing lanes and can guard multiple positions effectively. He moves his feet well laterally and has the size to switch onto bigger players when needed. The kid just understands how to impact winning without needing to dominate the ball.

Strengths

His feel for the game is what separates him from other wings at his level - Fenderson sees the floor like a point guard but has the size and skill to play multiple positions. He shoots the ball consistently from three-point range with proper mechanics and follow-through that suggest the stroke will translate to college. His passing ability is advanced for his position, and he can create for teammates off the dribble or find cutters when the defense overcommits. The motor runs hot on both ends - he competes defensively and crashes the boards despite not being the most explosive athlete in the gym.

Areas to Watch

Adding functional strength will be key as he prepares for Big Ten basketball, where he'll face bigger, more physical opponents nightly. His handle is solid but could use refinement to become a true primary ball-handler at the college level. If he can develop a more consistent mid-range game to complement his three-point shooting, it would make him much harder to guard.

Player Comparison

He reminds me of a young Brad Davison with better size and passing ability. Both players have that Wisconsin toughness and basketball intelligence that translates well to Greg Gard's system. Like Davison, Fenderson competes on every possession and has the skill set to contribute immediately even if he's not the most athletic player on the court.

Recruitment

Wisconsin got ahead of the curve by offering early and building a strong relationship with Fenderson and his family. The in-state connection obviously helped, but Gard and his staff did their homework on the kid's character and work ethic. Iowa State, DePaul, and Milwaukee all offered as well, showing that multiple programs saw the same potential. His commitment to Wisconsin came relatively early in the process, suggesting he found what he was looking for in Madison and didn't feel the need to drag things out.

Projection

At Wisconsin, Fenderson projects as a versatile wing who can play both forward spots and contribute immediately in Gard's system that values basketball IQ and toughness. His ceiling is that of a four-year starter who could develop into an all-conference caliber player by his junior or senior season. The pro trajectory is harder to project, but his skill set and basketball intelligence give him a chance to play professionally overseas even if the NBA isn't in the cards.
