Scout Report

Six-foot-six wings don't typically show up on recruiting boards before high school even starts for them in earnest. Landon Godfrey is the exception that makes you recalibrate what a 2028 prospect can look like on paper before he's even logged varsity minutes.

Background

Godfrey landed at Sunrise Christian Academy, a program with a track record of churning out Division I talent and NBA bodies, which tells you something about where his development is being pointed from the jump. He's part of a 2028 class that's still finding its footing nationally, but his size already separates him from the pack of guards his age. Playing in the same gym as Ivan Juric, a 2025 four committed to Penn State, and alongside fellow 2028 big man Ben McKinney and 2027 point guard Lincoln Vinson, Godfrey is getting reps against bodies and skill levels well beyond his grade. That kind of daily competition accelerates things — habits form faster, bad shots get weeded out quicker, and the game speeds up in a way AAU circuits for his age group simply can't replicate.

Playing Style

At 6-6, Godfrey already plays with the frame of a wing who's going to guard multiple positions down the road, but right now he's still very much a guard in terms of role and touches. He likes the ball in his hands on the perimeter, and he's not afraid to put it on the floor and attack rather than settle for standstill jumpers. Pace is something to monitor — like a lot of long, gangly guards at this age, there are stretches where his first move is faster than his feet can keep up with, leading to some live-dribble turnovers in traffic. Defensively, his length shows up immediately; he can contest shots that most kids his age simply can't reach, and he's got the tools to slide and bother ball handlers on the perimeter. He's not a non-stop motor guy yet — effort comes in waves rather than every single possession — but the flashes of activity, especially in passing lanes and closing out on shooters, hint at what's coming once strength and conditioning catch up to the frame. Decision-making with the ball is still raw, which is expected, but the instincts to find teammates rather than force tough looks are already there in flashes.

Strengths

The physical profile is the headline — 6-6 in a 2028 class is a real separator, and that length translates on both ends right now, not just in projection. He's got a feel for attacking off the bounce rather than being a stationary shooter, which gives coaches something to build a ball-handling wing around. His defensive length lets him disrupt passing lanes and contest at the rim in ways most guards his age physically can't. There's also a clear willingness to make the extra pass when the defense collapses, which is a trait that's harder to teach than it looks.

Areas to Watch

Strength and core control are the obvious next steps — his frame needs to fill out so he can finish through contact and hold up defensively against bigger, stronger wings as he climbs levels. Shot mechanics and consistency from the perimeter will determine whether he becomes a true three-level scorer or more of a slasher who needs the ball moving to get easy looks. Tightening up decision-making in live-dribble situations, particularly in ball-screen reads, would unlock a lot more efficiency as the offense starts to run through him more.

Player Comparison

His build and early playmaking instincts bring to mind a young Josh Giddey in terms of a tall guard who sees the floor well but is still figuring out his jumper and physicality. It's not a perfect stylistic match, but the combination of length, ball-handling responsibility, and pass-first tendencies at that height is the right shape of comparison. Worth stressing that at this stage it's about role projection more than a skill-for-skill match.

Recruitment

No offers yet, which tracks given he's a 2028 prospect still early in his high school career. Being at Sunrise Christian puts him squarely in front of college staffs who track that pipeline closely, so visibility won't be an issue once his tape builds up. Expect interest to start trickling in as he logs varsity minutes and the recruiting calendar for his class opens up over the next year or two. Programs that prioritize long, multi-positional guards with upside will likely be the first to circle back.

Projection

The college ceiling here is tied directly to how his shooting and strength develop — if both come along, there's a power-conference wing in this profile who can guard up and create his own offense. If the jumper lags, he still projects as a valuable connective piece who defends multiple spots and makes plays for others. Pro trajectory is far too early to forecast with any real confidence, but the size-skill combination at this age is the kind of thing that keeps a kid on watch lists for years.

Asked @iRacingMyers & @iRacing to scan North Wilksboro for preservation. Even if they don’t create it, they’ll have the data. He said the surface would need to be cleared of weeds to do it. I can get the keys to the gate. Who wants to help me do the landscaping?? #CallingHisBluff
