Scout Report

Seven high-major offers is a lot for a sophomore, and three of them landed in the same day. Mississippi State, Houston and Washington all got in line behind Auburn, Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Syracuse, and the reason is easy to see at 6-6 with guard skills.

Background

Wheatley comes out of Rahway, New Jersey, a town with deep roots in the state's guard-heavy basketball scene. He now plays at Brewster Academy, the New Hampshire prep program that has been a pipeline to the high-major level for years. Brewster stacks its roster, so he is not the only name on the board. He shares the floor with Michai White, a 2028 point guard ranked #17, and Antonio Pemberton, a 2027 point guard ranked #20 who is already committed to Michigan State. Dwayne Aristode, a ranked wing committed to Arizona, is also part of the Brewster pipeline. That is a demanding place to build a profile, and the offer list says he has built one anyway.

Playing Style

At 6-6 playing guard, Wheatley starts with a size advantage that most backcourt defenders cannot match. That height lets him see over pressure, pass into tight windows and finish through contact that would knock smaller guards off their spots. At Brewster he plays next to other ball handlers, so he has to be effective without dominating the ball. That usually points to a player who can run a pick-and-roll, play off a primary creator and make quick reads as a secondary decision-maker. The scouting question is how much of that he does well, and the volume of high-major interest suggests programs like what they see. On defense, a guard with his length can guard multiple positions, switch on screens and cover ground in passing lanes. The details of his tempo and shot profile are best judged on film and in live settings, and this report will not guess at them.

Strengths

Size at the guard spot is the clearest asset. Coaches at the high-major level pay for 6-6 players who can handle and pass, because those players hold up in switch-heavy schemes on both ends. His offer sheet also shows that programs from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 footprints all see a fit, which says his game translates across different systems. Playing alongside highly ranked guards at Brewster and still drawing this much attention speaks to his ability to produce without needing every possession. That kind of flexibility is what staffs look for in a long guard.

Areas to Watch

The usual development path for a young guard with this frame is adding strength and polishing the skill work that makes him dangerous at every spot on the floor. Consistency of the jumper, tight ball handling against pressure and physical growth are the typical markers that separate a good high-major guard from a high-impact one. With two full years of high school ball left, there is plenty of time for those pieces to come together.

Player Comparison

There is no clean one-to-one comp without more film and measurable detail, and forcing one would do him a disservice. The archetype is the big combo guard: a long, versatile perimeter player who can initiate offense, defend multiple spots and play next to another ball handler. College staffs have found plenty of uses for that profile.

Recruitment

The list now stands at Auburn, Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Syracuse, plus Mississippi State, Houston and Washington, who all offered today. No commitment has been reported. As a 2028 prospect he is a long way from signing day, and the offer list will almost certainly keep growing as the high-major programs continue to scout him. Rutgers has the in-state angle, and Syracuse and Georgia Tech bring ACC exposure. Auburn and Mississippi State add SEC options, and Houston offers a Big 12 path. Expect official visits and further offers over the next year before anything gets close to a decision.

Projection

The ceiling is a high-major rotation guard with the size to play on or off the ball, and the realistic range runs from a steady contributor to a multi-year starter, depending on how his skills develop. Whether he has pro potential will depend on how his shooting and decision-making grow over the next two seasons. Guards with this combination of size and offer volume usually have a path to meaningful college minutes, and what he adds from here will decide how far it goes.
