Scout Report

When you're sharing the court with three top-115 national prospects and still managing to carve out your own recruiting path, that tells you something about a player's mentality. At CATS Academy, that's exactly what Desmond Bellot Jr. has done, turning a loaded prep roster into his personal showcase platform.

Background

Boston has always produced tough, fundamentally sound guards, and Bellot fits that mold perfectly. The Massachusetts native made the move to CATS Academy, one of New England's premier prep programs, to accelerate his development against elite competition. Playing in that environment daily, going up against Division I commits in practice, has fast-tracked his maturation process. His family made the commitment to the prep route knowing it would challenge him in ways high school basketball couldn't match.

Playing Style

Bellot operates with the controlled aggression you want from a lead guard who can play off the ball when needed. At 6-3, he has the size to see over defenses and make reads, but his best asset is his pace control. He doesn't get sped up or slowed down by the defense - he dictates terms. In transition, he pushes when there's an advantage and pulls back when the defense recovers. His decision-making in pick-and-roll situations shows real maturity, knowing when to attack, when to dump off, and when to reset. Defensively, he uses his length well and stays disciplined in team concepts rather than gambling for steals.

Strengths

His basketball IQ jumps off the tape immediately - this kid sees the game two plays ahead. The shooting stroke is pure, especially catch-and-shoot opportunities where he gets his feet set quickly. What separates him from other guards at his level is his ability to create quality shots for teammates without forcing the action. He's got that rare combination of being aggressive enough to take over when needed but smart enough to know when to facilitate.

Areas to Watch

Adding more explosion to his first step would unlock another gear in his offensive game. Right now he gets to his spots through craft and timing, but a quicker initial burst would make him nearly impossible to stay in front of. Continuing to add strength will help him finish through contact at the rim more consistently.

Player Comparison

He reminds me of a young Malcolm Brogdon - similar size, basketball IQ, and that steady hand you want running your offense. Like Brogdon, he's not going to wow you with athleticism, but he makes winning plays and rarely beats himself with poor decisions. Both players maximize their physical tools through understanding the game at a high level.

Recruitment

Bellot has already locked in his future, committing to Fordham from a solid pool of 10 Division I offers. The Rams beat out programs like UMass, George Mason, and Rhode Island for his services. His relationship with the Fordham staff clearly resonated, and he saw an opportunity to make an immediate impact in the Atlantic 10. Getting his recruitment wrapped up early allows him to focus purely on development for the next year and a half.

Projection

At Fordham, he profiles as a day-one contributor who could grow into a primary ball-handler by his sophomore season. His ceiling is an all-conference caliber guard who elevates the players around him. Professional basketball isn't out of the question if he continues developing his athleticism, but his floor is high enough that he'll have a productive four-year college career regardless.
