A Michigan native who graduated from Muskegon Orchard View High School in 1995, Montonati played collegiate basketball at Fullerton Junior College before transferring to Oklahoma State University. During his three-year career with the Cowboys from 1997-2000, he averaged 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game and earned All-Big 12 honors in his senior season. After his playing career, Montonati transitioned seamlessly into coaching, serving as an assistant on the Rams staff for six seasons before being promoted to head coach.
