Joe Mantegna has transformed Blair Academy into a national prep school basketball powerhouse since arriving as head boys' varsity basketball coach in 1999. A 1991 graduate of Ithaca College, Mantegna has dedicated 25 years to Blair Academy, building an exceptional program that attracts elite talent from around the world. Under Mantegna's leadership, the program has achieved state championship success while developing numerous players who have gone on to stellar collegiate and professional careers. His first recruits in 1999, Luol Deng and Royal Ivey, exemplify the caliber of talent he attracts and develops. Deng, who fled war-torn South Sudan and arrived at Blair from the United Kingdom, went on to an illustrious NBA career and now serves as president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation. Mantegna's coaching philosophy emphasizes mentorship and adaptation, creating an environment where players from diverse backgrounds can thrive and develop close relationships that extend far beyond their time at Blair.
