Six-foot-seven is an awkward number for a center. Some programs see a size problem and move on. Houston saw something else, and Derek Daniels is now a Cougar commit out of Des Moines.
Background
Daniels comes out of Des Moines, Iowa, which has never been a dependable pipeline for national recruiting rankings. He plays at Iowa United Prep, where he shares a roster with several high-level players. Cornelius Ingram Jr. is a 2026 wing committed to Florida. Hudson Greer is headed to Creighton. Oneal Delancy, a 2027 combo guard, is committed to Houston, the same school Daniels picked. Playing day to day with that much Division I talent is a real developmental advantage for a big man, because the practice reps are against high-level bodies and not against overmatched teammates.
Playing Style
A 6-7 center has to win with something other than raw length, and that shapes how a player like Daniels has to operate. Positioning, timing, leverage and effort all matter more than they do for a 7-footer who can simply stand there and alter shots.
