Scout Report

When a 6-foot point guard from Georgia locks up a Colorado State commitment as a junior, you know there's something special in his film. Pops Dunson has been turning heads all summer, collecting offers from coast to coast.

Background

Douglasville sits about 20 miles west of Atlanta, and Dunson has been grinding in that competitive Georgia prep scene at Alexander High School. The area produces point guards regularly, but not many with his combination of size and court vision. He's been running with quality AAU programs in the Southeast, getting looks from major conference coaches who appreciate his basketball IQ and leadership qualities.

Playing Style

Dunson plays with the kind of controlled pace that veteran coaches love in their floor generals. He's not the fastest player on the court, but he doesn't need to be when he's consistently two steps ahead mentally. His decision-making in pick-and-roll situations is advanced for his age, and he understands when to push tempo versus when to slow things down and execute. Defensively, he uses his 6-foot frame well, staying in front of quicker guards and using positioning over pure athleticism. He's the type of player who makes everyone around him better simply by understanding game flow and making the right read consistently. His basketball IQ translates to both ends, where he anticipates passing lanes and rarely gets caught out of position.

Strengths

The basketball IQ jumps off the tape immediately. Dunson processes defensive rotations quickly and finds the open man consistently, even in tight windows. His size advantage over most point guards allows him to see over defenses and make passes that smaller players simply can't execute. He shoots the three-ball with confidence and has improved his pull-up game significantly over the past year, giving him legitimate scoring options to complement his facilitating.

Areas to Watch

Adding more explosion to his first step would unlock another gear in his game, particularly against high-level on-ball defenders. His frame suggests he can add functional strength without losing any quickness, which would help him finish through contact better around the rim.

Player Comparison

There's some Monte Morris in his game - a steady, reliable floor general who won't blow you away athletically but rarely makes mistakes and finds ways to impact winning. Both players use size and smarts to compensate for average quickness, and both have that rare ability to control game tempo.

Recruitment

Colorado State moved quickly and got their man, beating out several other mid-major programs and some Power Five interest. The Rams clearly see him as a program-changing point guard who can run their system for multiple years. With 17 D1 offers already and two more high school seasons ahead, he could have drawn even more attention, but Colorado State's early commitment and development track record with guards made sense for both sides.

Projection

He profiles as a four-year starter at the college level who could develop into an all-conference player by his junior season. Professional basketball isn't out of the question if he continues developing his athletic profile, but his floor is extremely high as a winning college point guard who understands how to run a team.

Good to see @CSUMBasketball commit Pops Dunson (@gpopsd) back on the floor with @ALX_Bball. He was asolif throughout but really got going later in the game with his potent scoring ability. He helped create the separation needed to get the W in the end. https://t.co/FEFDkpIFVw
